A new physician-engagement initiative is coming to UBC Hospital and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health.
The initiative’s goal is to involve physicians working in acute care facilities as true partners in the healthcare decision-making process, and help generate improvements that will make our future BC healthcare system sustainable. Without involving physicians, achieving better patient care, and better community health at the lowest cost possible will remain elusive goals.
A FIRST IN CANADA
This innovative province-wide initiative was born out of the 2014 Physician Master Agreement. A Memorandum of Understanding on Regional and Local Engagement was signed by the Ministry of Health, Doctors of BC and six Health Authorities, including Vancouver Coastal Health.
“We know from the most recent Doctors of BC members’ survey that physicians want to have meaningful input. This is our chance for that,” says Dr. Marshall Dahl, President of the Vancouver Physician Staff Association and Co-Chair of its Facility Engagement Initiative.
“Our initial priority is to collect as much information as we can on what’s important to physicians at our three sites: VGH, GF Strong and UBC Hospital. Once we know the hot-button issues, we’ll have a better idea about what the Facility Engagement projects and activities need to deliver,” explains Dr. Lyne Filiatrault, the Initiative’s other Co-Chair.
Annual funding to support engagement activities and physician led projects identified and prioritized by the Vancouver Physician Staff Association and its members will come from the Specialist Services Committee, a partnership between Doctors of BC and the Ministry of Health.
