Dr. Jan D. Lünemann is the UBC Chair in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Autoimmune Neurology Research and Director of the MS and Neuromyelitis Optica Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to joining UBC, he served as Director of the MS and Neuroimmunology Outpatient Clinic and its associated clinical trial centre, as well as Director of the Integrated Centre of Excellence for Clinical Care and Research in Myasthenia Gravis at the University Hospital Münster, Germany.

Dr. Lünemann received his medical degree from Humboldt University in Berlin and completed his neurology residency at the Department of Neurology, Charité – University Hospital Berlin, Germany. He subsequently pursued postdoctoral research in cellular immunology at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, and at Rockefeller University in New York. Before his appointment in Münster, he was Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Neuroinflammation at the Institute of Experimental Immunology, University of Zurich, and served as Senior Consultant in the Departments of Neurology at the University Hospitals of Zurich and Basel, Switzerland.

Dr. Lünemann has received several prestigious awards, including the Human Immunology Award from the Irvington Institute for Immunological Research and the Dana Foundation (New York), and the Siegenthaler Scientific Award for Medical Sciences from the University of Zurich. He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology (FEAN) and a Fellow of the American Neurological Association (FANA). He serves on the Scientific Panels on Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology of the European Academy of Neurology, is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the German Myasthenia Gravis Society, and serves on the Executive Board of the German Myasthenia Research Network. His research focuses on elucidating the immunological mechanisms underlying multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and other autoimmune neurological diseases, with the goal of developing and translating innovative immune-based therapies into clinical practice.

Research Information

My research aims to advance our understanding of the complex interactions between the immune and nervous systems in health and disease. Through the integration of human discovery science, systems immunology, artificial intelligence, engineering, and clinical neuroscience, we seek to uncover the mechanisms that initiate immune-mediated neurological diseases, determine why patients follow different disease trajectories, restore immune tolerance, promote nervous system repair and regeneration, and develop precision diagnostics and next-generation therapies that improve patient outcomes.
