These breakthroughs are already reshaping how we support brain health through faster answers\, more precise care\, and renewed hope for patients and families. \nUBC Connects at Robson Square\, in partnership with the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health\, presents leading UBC scholars Dr. Cheryl Wellington\, Dr. Wolfram Tetzlaff and Dr. Stefanie Blain-Moraes in a conversation about the future of brain injury research and recovery. \nFree and open to all. \n  \nSpeaker bios:\nDr. Cheryl Wellington is Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC. Dr. Wellington’s lab takes a translational approach to researching brain health\, focusing on both the fundamental biological mechanisms underlying Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the clinical utility of fluid biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of neurological conditions. Dr. Wellington also holds multiple leadership positions in both the dementia and neurotrauma communities\, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. \nDr. Wolfram Tetzlaff is Professor in the Departments of Zoology and Surgery at UBC and former Director of ICORD (International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries). Dr. Tetzlaff’s research focuses on developing experimental strategies for neuroprotection and neural repair\, with an emphasis on understanding why the spinal cord fails to regenerate after spinal cord injury. His ultimate goal is to combine multiple strategies to promote nerve cell growth and improve recovery\, helping to advance new therapies for spinal cord and brain injury. He recently received the King Charles III Coronation Medals\, recognizing him as a spinal cord injury research trailblazer. \nDr. Stefanie Blain-Moraes is an Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Occupational Sciences and Occupational Therapy at UBC. She leads the Biosignal Interaction and Personhood Technology (BIAPT) Lab\, which aims to develop technologies to assess consciousness and sustain relationships with minimally communicative persons. Her research program has involved persons in disorders of consciousness and palliative care; adults with dementia\, Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; and children with autism and severe disabilities. Recently\, she was elected as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars\, Artists\, and Scientists. \nModerator:\nDr. Shernaz Bamji is a Professor in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences and Co-Director of the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health Her research is focused on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neural connectivity and synaptic plasticity. Her work has provided key insights into the fundamental mechanisms underlying learning and memory\, as well as how these processes are disrupted in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders such as intellectual disabilities\, schizophrenia\, autism and Alzheimer’s disease.

DESCRIPTION:The talk will undertake an overview of the physiology of the human dying process as an in vivo model of brain ischemia physiology. The talk will cover the feasibility of undertaking this work at VGH and the characterization of the physiology of circulatory arrest in humans. Additionally\, I will describe preliminary insights into the changes of the proteome and metabolome of the human brain during brain ischemia and use of whole brain autopsies for insights into disease mechanisms.

SUMMARY:Dr. Guillaume Dumas: Multi-Brain Neuroscience: from Generative Neurophenomenology to Inter-Personalized Psychiatry
DESCRIPTION:Human cognition and mental health do not arise from the brain alone\, but from continuous interactions among people\, bodies\, and social environments. This talk introduces a multi-brain perspective on neuroscience that connects research on consciousness with new directions in psychiatry. Using recent advances that enable multiple brains to be recorded simultaneously\, we explore how everyday social interactions\, such as conversation\, cooperation\, and shared attention\, give rise to coordinated patterns of brain activity across individuals. These patterns reflect how people align emotionally\, cognitively\, and behaviorally during real-world interactions. \nBuilding on these insights\, the talk argues for a shift in how we think about mental health. Rather than focusing solely on what happens inside an individual’s brain\, we propose an embodied and relational view in which well-being and vulnerability depend on the quality of interactions with others. Changes in how brains coordinate during social exchanges have been linked to a range of psychiatric conditions\, suggesting that mental health is shaped by relationships as much as by biology. Inter-personalized psychiatry extends this idea by considering diagnosis and intervention at the level of pairs\, families\, and groups\, integrating brain mechanisms with lived social experience. \nOverall\, this work highlights how studying brains in interaction can deepen our understanding of consciousness\, inform more socially grounded approaches to mental health\, and open new paths for clinical research and practice.

SUMMARY:Dr. Kelsie Eichel: Building a polarized neuron: from C. elegans to humans
DESCRIPTION:Neurons are defined by their remarkable polarity\, a feature that is highly conserved across most nervous systems. A key neuronal structure\, the axon initial segment (AIS)\, is essential for establishing and maintaining a functional\, polarized neuronal architecture. As such\, defects in the AIS and a loss of polarity are associated with neurological dysfunction and numerous disease states. Though critical for fundamental aspects of neuronal polarity and synaptic transmission\, we have lacked the tools to define the molecular choreography that endows the AIS with such important functions until recently. My work has spearheaded approaches to visualize and uncover the dynamic cell biology at the AIS in both cultured mammalian neurons and living C. elegans animals. I will present our findings on how active cellular mechanisms at the AIS maintain neuronal polarity and drive nervous system function\, bridging cellular and developmental neurobiology with the behavior of living animals.

SUMMARY:Dr. Christian Ruff: Neurocomputational Underpinnings of Altered Mentalization in Autism
DESCRIPTION:A key behavioral characteristic of autistic individuals is difficulty with mentalization—the ability to understand and respond to the mental states of others. While these difficulties have important social and clinical consequences\, the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying them remain poorly understood. In this presentation\, I will argue that one reason for this lack of progress is the limitation of standard experimental approaches used to study mentalization. These methods typically focus on the static application of fixed mentalization strategies and fail to capture a crucial feature of real-life social interactions: the fact that other people’s behaviors and mental states are constantly changing over time. \nTo address this\, I will present a novel behavioral paradigm and computational model designed to assess adaptive mentalization — the ability to dynamically estimate an interaction partner’s level of behavioral sophistication and to flexibly adjust one’s own strategy in response. Using this approach in combination with fMRI\, we identified a multivariate neural fingerprint that can predict\, even in new individuals\, how well they can update their mental models in response to changes in others’ behavior. \nWe have now applied this paradigm in a preregistered study of autistic individuals. Our findings show that higher levels of autistic traits are associated with both reduced capacity for adaptive mentalization and a weaker expression of the same neural fingerprint. These results demonstrate that it is possible to measure a specific\, dynamic deficit in mentalization that is linked to autistic traits—both behaviorally and neurally. We hope this work contributes to a more nuanced theoretical understanding of both mentalization and autism\, and may ultimately support improved methods for its assessment and diagnosis. \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Jennifer Gommerman: Targeting B cells in MS - understanding mechanisms of action.
DESCRIPTION:I will be presenting data on an animal model of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) progression\, how we have used this model to better understand disease progression and to understand how MS treatments impact this process. By going back and forth between the animal model and MS tissues\, we have learned about what can trigger so-called “compartmentalized inflammation” in MS\, and have unveiled a potential fluid biomarker that reflects this inflammation.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate World Brain Day by joining the BC Brain Wellness Program and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health for a live session of presentations and panel discussion about expanding research and brain health practices beyond traditional and Western models of science and care. \nRegister online\n  \nFeatured speakers: \nDr. Silke Appel-Cresswell\n\n\n\n\nDr. Silke Appel-Cresswell is a movement disorder neurologist and Associate Professor for Medicine/Neurology at the University of British Columbia. She holds the Marg Meikle Professorship for Research in Parkinson’s disease and directs the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre at UBC. Her research focusses on the role of the microbiome in Parkinson’s disease\, and other brain disorders\, nutrition and other lifestyle interventions as well as non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s and is a leader in the use of ultrasound guidance for botulinum toxin injections in movement disorders. She is the founding director of the BC Brain Wellness Program and previously served as the president of the Canadian Movement Disorder Society and as the Director of the Canadian Residents Course for Movement Disorders. She is the recipient of a 2022/2023 UBC Killam Teaching Award\, and was made an Honorary UBC Medical Alumna in 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tanya Barretto\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTanya Barretto is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Neuroethics Canada and Project Lead for the Ethics arm of the Mend the Gap project. Dr. Barretto received her BSc in Biochemistry from Concordia University\, Montreal\, her MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Essex\, England and her PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Toronto. She uses her basic science background in regenerative medicine in neurotrauma models of spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury to drive the ethics and knowledge translation aspects of Mend the Gap at Neuroethics Canada. In her free time\, Dr. Barretto can be found travelling to explore off the beaten track locations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Marissa Lithopoulos\n\n\n\n\nDr. Marissa Lithopoulos is a scientist and storyteller. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia\, Marissa helps us understand how stem cells contribute to brain development and how we can harness this potential to treat conditions affecting the brain. She is the Co-Founder of Beaker Banter and Founder of Science\, Stand-Up\, & Song\, initiatives that aim to bridge the gap between scientists and the public.

SUMMARY:Translating Plant Biodiversity Studies to Impact Health and Medicine
DESCRIPTION:A special lecture by Dr. Bin T. Teh\, Director of the Singhealth Duke-NUS Institute of Biodiversity Medicine (BD-MED)\, on ‘Translating Plant Biodiversity Studies to Impact Health and Medicine’ will take place on Wed\, Aug 19th at 3-4pm in DMCBH 3402 A/B\, with refreshments and a social hour after. \nDr. Teh will explore how biodiversity\, from iconic species like Singapore’s national flower (Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim)\, can be translated into new insights for human health and therapeutics. We will learn about BD-MED\, a joint initiative by Singapore Health Service and Duke-NUS Medical School\, which aims to drive and accelerate biodiversity research that can promote all aspects of human health and wellness\, and its three signature programmes: 1) Herbal Biodiversity and Medicine\, 2) Food Biodiversity and Nutrition and 3) Urban Biodiversity and Wellness. \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Jonathan Pillow: Disentangling the Roles of Distinct Cell Classes with Cell-Type Dynamical Systems
DESCRIPTION:A large body of recent work has focused on the problem of inferring neural population dynamics from recordings of neural activity. However\, these models typically ignore the fact that the brain contains multiple cell types\, which limits their ability to predict the effects of cell-specific perturbations\, or to capture the functional roles of distinct cell classes. To overcome these limitations\, we introduce the “cell-type dynamical systems” (CTDS) model\, which extends latent linear dynamical systems to contain distinct latent variables for each cell class. In this talk\, I will describe the CTDS model and show that it can account for the effects of optogenetic perturbations on behavior — even when fit to unperturbed recordings of neural activity.  Specifically\, I will discuss a multi-region CTDS model fit to simultaneous recordings from rat frontal orienting fields (FOF) and anterior dorsal striatum (ADS) during an auditory decision-making task. Although fit only to unperturbed neural activity\, the model predicts the time-dependent effects of different optogenetic perturbations on behavior\, specifically in FOF\, ADS\, and FOF-to-ADS axon terminals. I will close by discussing future directions and other applications for biologically-constrained dynamical models of neural activity and behavior.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Bolton will discuss how early-life adversity impacts brain development in the context of psychiatric disorders\, with a focus on the role of microglia in the synaptic rewiring of stress-sensitive neurons after early-life adversity. I will also describe our work on sex-dependent differences in microglia and synaptic development\, as well as the molecular mechanisms by which early-life adversity alters microglia.

SUMMARY:Dr. Deblina Sarkar: Circulatronics: Surgery-Free Neural Implants for Focal Brain Stimulation
DESCRIPTION:Bioelectronic implants for brain stimulation provide critical tools for treating brain diseases as well as investigating fundamental biology but require invasive surgery. In this talk I will discuss a new class of implants which we named Circulatronics: wherein intravenously introduced bioelectronic devices travel through the body’s global internal roadways i.e.\, the circulatory system\, and autonomously implant (without any external guidance) in the target brain region\, circumventing the need for any surgery. I will present how this enables targeted focal neuromodulation of deep brain regions in rodents. To achieve this\, we built subcellular-sized wireless energy harvesting electronics with high power conversion efficiency and integrated them with cells to create unique cell-electronics hybrids. Thus\, we fused electronic functionality with the biological transport and targeting capabilities of living cells. This technology can form the foundation for autonomously implanting bioelectronics with unprecedented access to the human body without surgery\, opening new avenues for healthcare and research.

SUMMARY:Dr. Yulong Li: Quantitative imaging of neuromodulator dynamics in vivo by constructing new GRAB sensors
DESCRIPTION:The human brain comprises billions of neurons that communicate primarily through chemical synapses by releasing diverse neuromodulators\, which regulate perception\, movement\, learning\, and memory. Dissecting the neural mechanisms in both physiology and disease requires precise in vivo monitoring of neuromodulator dynamics. In the past few years\, we and others have developed a series of GPCR-activation‒based (GRAB) sensors that enable high-resolution monitoring of extracellular neuromodulator dynamics in behaving animals. Here\, I will present our latest GRAB sensors featuring large fluorescence lifetime changes\, which allow precise quantification of both phasic and tonic neuromodulator release. With these GRAB sensors\, we have monitored the dynamics of neuromodulators in mice in a wide range of physiological processes (reward\, motion\, etc.) and pathological conditions (Parkinson’s disease\, etc.).

DESCRIPTION:The head-direction (HD) circuit\, an upstream provider of orientation signals for navigation\, maintains coherent internal orientation memory that stays stable within each environment for weeks. During non-REM sleep\, when hippocampal trajectories are replayed for memory formation\, HD cells remain coordinated and directly influence this hippocampal replay. This suggests the HD system conveys a “virtual” orientation signal to support memory replay\, with the thalamus appearing to play a crucial role in generating it. Overall\, the HD system supplies the hippocampus and associated structures with a coherent\, possibly lifelong-stable signal maintained across brain states to support spatial navigation and memory formation.
