SUMMARY:Dr. Michael J. Strong: The discovery of NF242 as a potential biotherapeutic for ALS: when a little competition is a good thing
DESCRIPTION:TDP-43 protein aggregation is a pathological hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this talk\, Dr. Michael Strong will discuss the discovery of NF242\, an N-terminal fragment of the RNA-binding protein RGNEF that competes for interactions with TDP-43 and reduces its toxicity in experimental models of ALS. Dr. Strong will describe the development of NF242 as a potential biotherapeutic and what this work reveals about targeting pathological protein interactions in ALS. \n  \nDr. Michael J. Strong is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at Western University. He served as the President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research from 2018 to 2023\, as the Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University from 2010 to 2018\, and from 2000 to 2010\, as Chief of Neurology and Co-Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences. His research has focused on understanding the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) including the role of altered RNA metabolism in its genesis in addition to defining a role for altered tau metabolism in the frontotemporal spectrum disorder of ALS. He has published over 260 peer-reviewed articles\, edited 4 textbooks and given over 200 invited lectures on these topics. He is the only Canadian to be the recipient of both Sheila Essay Award and the Forbes Norris Award for his care of ALS patients and his research. He was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology in 2008 and of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2009. In 2025\, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation medal.

DESCRIPTION:The head-direction (HD) circuit\, an upstream provider of orientation signals for navigation\, maintains coherent internal orientation memory that stays stable within each environment for weeks. During non-REM sleep\, when hippocampal trajectories are replayed for memory formation\, HD cells remain coordinated and directly influence this hippocampal replay. This suggests the HD system conveys a “virtual” orientation signal to support memory replay\, with the thalamus appearing to play a crucial role in generating it. Overall\, the HD system supplies the hippocampus and associated structures with a coherent\, possibly lifelong-stable signal maintained across brain states to support spatial navigation and memory formation.

SUMMARY:Dr. Emily Bayer: Brain-body signaling in Danionella cerebrum
DESCRIPTION:The brain is constantly receiving sensory information from inside of the body\, but it is underappreciated how this internal sensory information can affect animal behavior. To address this\, we are developing the small transparent fish Danionella cerebrum as a model for brain-body signaling. I will describe our work characterizing the anatomy\, molecular subtypes\, and sexual dimorphism in D. cerebrum nervous system\, especially the visceral sensory neurons. Our current research directions are focused on linking these sexually dimorphic visceral sensory neurons to reproductive behaviors\, and I will discuss our recent progress in high throughput behavioral quantification during mating. Ultimately\, D. cerebrum presents a unique opportunity to holistically consider how the nervous system responds to cues from inside of the body to generate mating behaviors at the appropriate time.
