Medical professionals have a new tool to help them care for patients who have sustained a concussion.

The Concussion Awareness Training Tool for Medical Professionals (CATT MP) launched this June. The updated e-learning course is free-of-charge, available in both English and French, and is eligible for credits with the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Originally launched in 2013, the revised CATT MP shifts its original focus from recognition and diagnosis to concussion care and management. The course will cover how to effectively assess a patient’s concussion situation within the initial hours post-injury, how to optimally manage concussion care during the first two to four weeks post-injury, and how to identify when referral to specialty care is required.

CATT MP contains updated content from the 2017 recommendations from the Consensus statement of Concussion in Sport and other evidence-based resources.

The course was developed by Dr. Shelina Babul at the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit, BC Children’s Hospital and in partnership with Parachute and the Public Health Agency of Canada, and is a product of the national Concussion Protocol Harmonization Project.

“Knowledge and awareness of concussions has increased, but with all of the information out there it can be difficult for health professionals to stay updated on the latest information,” said Dr. Babul. “The updated CATT course is a great way for health professionals to learn about concussion diagnosis, care, and management of concussion.”
